Japanese Language Courses in London

Japanese is a language spoken by over 130 million people, mainly in Japan, but also by Japanese emigrant communities around the world. The Japanese language is written with a combination of three different types of scripts: the Chinese characters (kanji) and two syllabic scripts, hiragana and katakana. The Latin alphabet (romaji) is also often used in modern Japanese, especially for company names and logos, for advertising, and when typing on computer keyboards. Western style numerals are generally used for numbers, but traditional Sino-Japanese numerals are also commonplace.

Japan is located in the Pacific Ocean to the east of China, Korea, and Russia. Japan is comprised of over 3,000 islands, the largest of which are Honshu ( the main island), Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. The Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, are a chain of islands south of Kyushu. Together they are often known as the Japanese Archipelago.

Most of the islands are mountainous, many being volcanic, including Japan's highest mountain, Mount Fuji. About 70% of the country unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. This is due mainly to steep elevations and risk of landslides caused by earthquakes, soft ground and heavy rain. This has resulted in an extremely high population density in the habitable zones located in the coastal areas.

Japan has the world's second largest economy and is a member of the United Nations, G8 and APEC. Close government-industry cooperation, a strong work ethic, mastery of complex technologies, and a comparatively small defense budget have allowed Japan to become one of the preeminent economies in the world. Major industries in Japan include banking, insurance, real estate, retailing, transportation telecommunications and construction.

Japan has the world's tenth largest population, with around 127 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. However Japan is currently facing a demographic challenge as its population is aging rapidly and is expected to fall by 30% in the next 50 years.
