< Back Hebrew Language Courses in LondonHebrew or Ivrit is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by more than seven million people in Israel and Jewish communities around the world. In Israel, it is the de facto language of the state and the people, as well as being, together with Arabic, one of the two official languages, and it is spoken by a majority of the population. The core of the Hebrew Bible is written in Classical Hebrew, and much of its present form is specifically the dialect of Biblical Hebrew that scholars believe flourished around the 6th century BCE. After the 2nd century CE when the Roman Empire exiled the Jewish population of Jerusalem and parts of the Bar Kokhba State, Hebrew gradually ceased to be a spoken language, but remained a major literary language. Letters, contracts, commerce, science, philosophy, medicine, poetry, and laws were written in Hebrew, which adapted by borrowing and inventing terms. Hebrew, long extinct outside of Jewish liturgical and scholarly purposes, was revived as a literary and narrative language by the Haskalah (Enlightenment) movement of the mid-19th century. Near the end of that century the Jewish linguist Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, owing to the ideology of Zionism, began reviving Hebrew as a modern spoken and written language. Eventually it replaced a score of languages spoken by Jews at that time, such as Arabic, Ladino (also called Judezmo), Yiddish, Russian, and other languages of the Jewish diaspora. Because of its large disuse for centuries, Hebrew lacked many modern words. Several were adapted as neologisms from the Hebrew Bible or borrowed from Yiddish and other languages by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. Modern Hebrew became an official language in British-ruled Palestine in 1921 (along with English and Arabic), and then in 1948 became an official language of the newly declared State of Israel. Israel has two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic. Hebrew is the major and primary language of the state and is spoken by the majority of the population. Arabic is spoken by the Arab minority and by some members of the Mizrahi Jewish community. English is studied in school and is spoken by the majority of the population as a second language. Other languages spoken in Israel include Russian, Yiddish, Ladino, Romanian, Polish, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Amharic and Persian. The State of Israel is a country in the Western Asian Levant, on the southeastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon on the north, Syria and Jordan on the east, and Egypt on the south-west. Its capital is Tel-Aviv. The birth of the state of Israel resulted from the Zionist movement, conceived in the 19th century to create a homeland for Jews. Ancient Jews had scattered around the world following the conquest and occupation of Palestine by the Romans and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Towards the end of the 19th century, Jews seeking escape from persecution in Europe began migrating en masse to Palestine, then an Arabic-speaking part of the Ottoman empire; by 1914 Palestine's Jewish population had more than doubled. In 1917, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, stating support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine without "prejudice" to the rights of the Palestinian Arabs. After the war, Palestine was placed under a British mandate and, as Zionist immigration increased, violence flared between its Jewish and Arab communities. After the Holocaust, pressure grew for the international recognition of a Jewish state, and the UN proposed the partition of the Palestine mandate into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. The Arab states rejected partition and invaded Palestine as soon as the British withdrew. The State of Israel was declared on 14 May 1948. The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to be a source of tension within and outside of Israel. In particular, this has caused tension with Israel's Arab neighbors, some of whom Israel has frequently come into conflict with. Israel's population is estimated as over 7 million inhabitants. It's major exports in 2006 were: Polished diamonds: 31%, chemical and chemical products 19%, electronic communication and medical & scientific equipment 16.6%, electronic components & computers 6.9%.
