Turkish is a Turkic language spoken mainly in Turkey with smaller communities of speakers in Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Cyprus and Greece.  It is also spoken by several million emigrants spread across Western Europe.  Turkish is the largest Turkic language in terms of number of speakers, with around 50 million native speakers.

The Republic of Turkey is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula to south-west Asia and the Balkan region of south-eastern Europe.  Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaidjan, Iraq and Syria.  The Black Sea lies to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

Due to its strategic location at the point where two continents meet, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences and is often described as a bridge between two civilisations.

Turkey has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is ranked in the 'top 20' of the world's largest economies.  The agricultural sector accounts for 11.9% of GDP, whilst the industrial and service sectors make up 23.7% and 64.5% respectively. The tourism sector has experienced rapid growth in the last twenty years and constitutes an important part of the economy.  Turkey's main trading partners are the European Union (52% of exports and 42% of imports in 2005), the United States, Russia and Japan. Turkey has taken advantage of a customs union with the European Union, signed in 1995, to increase its industrial production destined for exports, whilst at the same time benefitting from EU foreign investment into the country.
