Polish is the official language of Poland and is the second most widely spoken slavic language after Russian.  Polish shares some vocabulary with the languages of the neighbouring Slavic nations, most notably with Slovak, Czech, Ukrainian and Belarusian.

Polish is the native language of 38 million Poles, the second language in western Belarus and the Ukraine, and is also spoken in eastern Lithuania.  Due to a series of historical emigrations from Poland, millions of Polish speakers may be found in many countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, etc.  There are over 50 million Polish-speakers worldwide.

Poland, officially known as the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and the Baltic Sea, Lithuania and the Russian enclave Kaliningrad Oblast to the north.  It also shares a maritime border with Denmark and Sweden.

The Poles voted to join the European Union in a referendum in June 2003 becoming a full member on 1 May 2004.
