Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea. It is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in China. Worldwide, there are about 80 million Korean speakers, with large groups residing in various Post-Soviet states, as well as China, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, and more recently, South Africa and the Philippines.
Many linguists support the hypothesis that Korean can be classified as an Altaic language or as a relative of proto-Altaic, especially as Korean bears some morphological resemblance to some languages of the Eastern Turkic group. However, the classification of the modern Korean language is still described as uncertain and is sometimes described conservatively as an 'isolated' language. Modern Korean is written almost exclusively in the Hangul script, which was invented in the 15th century. The Hangul script is a phonemic alphabet organized into syllabic blocks. The alphabet consists of 24 letters: 14 consonants and 10 vowels.
Korea is situated on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It is currently divided into North Korea and South Korea, and the term "Korea" may refer to either or both of these states. In 1910, Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan and remained occupied until the end of World War II. In 1945, the Soviet Union and United States troops occupied the northern and southern halves of the country, respectively. The two Cold War enemies helped establish governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea.
