Hindi is classified as a language belonging to the Indo-European family of languages. Hindi, spoken mainly in northern and central India, is one of the official languages of the Union government of India. Hindi is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world. According to the census of India of 2001, Hindi is the mother tongue of about 337 million Indians or about 40% of the population in that year.
Hindi is the predominant language in the Indian states and union territories of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Outside these areas, Hindi is widely spoken in cities like Mumbai, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, all of which have their own native languages but harbour large communities of people from various parts of India.
Hindi is often contrasted with Urdu, another standardised form of Hindustani that is the official language of Pakistan and also an official language in some parts of India. The primary differences between the two are that Standard Hindi is written in Devanagari and draws its vocabulary with words from (Indo-Aryan) Sanskrit, while Urdu is written in Nastaliq script, a variant of the (Semitic) Perso-Arabic script, and draws heavily on Persian and Arabic vocabulary.
The Republic of India, commonly known as India, is a sovereign country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area and the second most populous country. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres. It borders Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia.
India has a population of approximately 1.1 billion people (2007), comprising approximately one-sixth of the world's population. This population is remarkably diverse; it has more than two thousand ethnic groups, and every major religion is represented, as are four major families of languages (Indo-European, Dravidian, Austro-Asiatic and Tibeto-Burman languages). With the world's twelfth largest economy by exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing power, India has made rapid economic progress in the last decade.
