Modern Greek is spoken today by 14-17 million people, mainly in Greece and Cyprus but also by minorities and immigrant communities in many other countries.  Greek is the official language of Greece where it is spoken by 99.5% of the population.  It is also, alongside Turkish and English, one of the official languages of Cyprus.  Greek is one of the 23 official languages of the European Union.

The Greek alphabet has been used to write the Greek language since the ninth century BC.  Greek letters are also used as symbols in mathematics and science and greek words are often used in astronomy and for many medical terms.

Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country in south-eastern Europe.  It is bordered by Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria to the north, and by Turkey to the east.  The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, whilst the Ionian Sea lies to the west.  A vast number of Greek islands are located in both of these eastern Mediterranean seas.

Greece has been a member of the European Union since 1981 and has used the Euro as its monetary currency since 2001.  Athens is the capital city whilst Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Volos and Larissa are some of the country's other major cities.

Greece has a capitalist economy that produced a GDP of $251.7 billion in 2006.  Greece ranks 24th in the 2006 HDI (Human Development Index).  The principal economic activities include the tourism and shipping industries, banking & finance, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications.  Because of its strategic location, qualified workforce, political and economic stability, many multinational companies set up their regional R&D Headquarters in Greece.
