Czech Language Courses at LSI Language School in Central London
Czech is one of the Western Slavic languages, along with Slovak and Polish. It is spoken by most people in the Czech Republic and by Czechs all over the world (about 12 million native speakers in total). Czech is very similar to Slovak and, to a lesser degree, to Polish. Czech and Slovak are usually mutually intelligible. Most adult Czechs and Slovaks are able to understand each other without difficulty as they were routinely exposed to both languages on Czechoslovakian national television and radio until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993. Czech television, in particular the commercial channels, is still quite popular among audiences in Slovakia. Meanwhile, due to some immigration from Slovakia, the Slovak language may still be heard within the Czech Republic.
The Czech Republic is located in Central Europe and is a member of the European Union. The country has borders with Poland to the north, Germany to the north-west and west, Austria to the south, and Slovakia to the east. The capital, and the country's largest city, is Prague which is now a major tourist destination. The country is composed of the historical regions, Bohemia and Moravia, as well as parts of Silesia.
The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. The last Czech government had expressed a desire to adopt the euro in 2010, but the current government has postponed it due to budget deficits.
The Czech Republic has been recovering from recession since mid-1999. Growth is led by exports to the European Union, especially Germany, and foreign investment and even domestic demand is reviving.
